2025/ 2026 SEASON NEWS

SWEEPS CAMPS REPORTS

What is it with Palm Beach and the way every year, it turns on perfect weather for our Sweep Camps? Yes, another sensational weekend of weather and surf.

This year, the Camp was preceded by SLSA running a Performance Coaching Course on the Friday where 30 Sweeps from around the country came together to take their Coaching knowledge to the next level. This day was a complete success and it would only have been so if it was not for the experience of Dr Grant Wilkinson who was an outstanding presenter who held everyone’s attention throughout the entire day. Thanks also to Tracey Bloxsom from SLSA who was instrumental in making the day happen.

The Sweep Camp officially begins early on the Saturday, however everyone knows it really starts on Friday night when the Boatie Cultural session begins. On this evening, Sweeps from all around the country arrive, many for the first time and others who are now a part of the furniture.

This year, we had over sixty Sweeps attend from all States and approximately 75% were first timers. Saturday started with the obligatory water session which was in small surf, however perfect to get some quality buoy turn and starts done.

A sensational lunch followed the water session then an afternoon of guest presenters and interactions covering a range of topics that kept interest high. Following dinner and what can only be described as another epic Legend Session where guest masters of our sport hold court in a relaxed interactive evening where many true and tall stories were told and discussed. Special thanks to Shane Geloven & Michael Brooks who each gave an insight into what it takes to become multiple Aussie Champions.

The expectation of the surf coming up for Sunday was rewarded with nice waves and a Surf Risk Rating of 15 which was perfect for all Sweeps, many of whom went on to be assessed and moving up an accreditation level. In fact, we assessed nine to S1 and four to S3 levels.

There is no doubt that this weekend was an outstanding success. The ASRL would like to thank all who helped make it another success. Special thanks to Mark Highfield and Peter Spence who worked tirelessly to ensure we all felt welcome.

Thanks to Scott Tannahill for providing this review of Palm Beach Sweeps Weekend

Bancoora Surfclub hosted our National Rookies weekend. This was an exciting new initiative from the Sweeps Academy targeting sweeps who are new to the competition phase of their sweeping journey. Taking place on the 11th and 12th of October. The weekend was run by Scotty Tannahill, Myself and Nathan Perry, along with other local Victorian experienced sweeps. This camp allowed us to give ‘rookie’ sweeps the skills and confidence to take their sweeping to the next level. There were just over 20 participants from VIc, SA and NSW.

Here’s  a summary of the fantastic weekend down south from Scotty Edwards

With the collaboration of SLSA, the ASRL and with the assistance of a Maritime grant, from the Geoffrey Evans Trust we recently ran a very successful Rookie Sweep Weekend at Bancoora Surf Club on the 11th and 12th of October.

Friday afternoon was a very casual meet and greet at the Bancoora Surf club and a few of us ventured into Torquay or Barwon Heads for a bite to eat. Those who ventured south to Torquay had the bonus of a Ben Lee concert which was attended by a few Williamstown SLSC sweeps. Later a few cleansing ales were had for those staying in the bunk rooms to get acquainted.

Saturday morning was a theory session run by Scotty Tannahill, Jackson McCaffrey, Nathan Perry and myself. Topics covered were the S1-S3 journey. Sweeping stance, Turns, Wave Catching. Further, we covered rules and sweep etiquette, where the main emphasis as a beginning sweep is to always remain polite and humble. Nathan Perry and Jackson talked about building and maintaining club culture, whilst Scotty Tannahill gave us all a run down on the Maritime Rules that we need to be aware of as Surfboat Sweeps. And a few other topics.

After Lunch, with the surf looking ‘very fun’ albeit too challenging for the participants, we headed to Fishermans Beach in Torquay for the budding sweeps to hone their skills on the water. A perfect little 1-2 foot wave was on offer and provided the perfect challenge for the sweeps. Along with a stiff crosswind, all sweeps were able to grow in both confidence and skill ability. A big shout out to David ‘Higgi’ Higgenbotham for his expertise on the water and spending some time on the little stick, rowing and assisting the rookie sweeps on the water.

Saturday night we were treated to a perfect Paella, superbly cooked by chief organiser and number 1 host Scotty ‘S1’ Tannahill. It was delicious. The Bancoora SLSC were also gracious hosts and the bar was well patronised and the ‘networking’ continued into the evening.

Sunday we were again at Fisherman’s Beach, the wind and swell had dropped and the attendees spent another 3 hours on the water honing their skills. I was absolutely stoked with the improvement in all 21 who attended in how much more comfortable they looked up the back on the big stick. I love seeing the look on new sweeps faces when they hold their first wave or nail a turn. As Bob Stone said “If we all just keep taking from the cup there will be nothing left. We all need to just pour a little back in”. The more sweeps clubs have, the better for the sport. Whether that be training sweeps or sweeps ready to step up to competition, it will all help grow this amazing and special sport.

I’d like to thank Tracey Bloxsom for her support from SLSA, Bec Hamilton for a lot of the leg work in the initial organisation. NR Perry for making the trip down, Jackson McCaffery for his scientific brain approach to all things sweeping. Higgi for his enthusiasm and efforts rowing and mentoring over the weekend. And Finally Scotty Tannahil for being the Host with the Most!!!! He was the Glue that held an amazing weekend- Thanks mate. And Finally to the Bancoora Surf Club- Amazing Hosts- Thank you!!!

I Look forward to seeing all those who attended on the water soon- I hope you all enjoyed the weekends on offer and that they were valuable for you. Good luck in your sweeping journey.

See you on the Beach,

Scotty Edwards

TREASURERS UPDATE

It’s been an interesting few months developing budgets for the 25/26 season and following up on a number of financial matters left over from last season.

Overall ASRL is in a sound financial position with over $200,000 currently in the bank, of which $150,000 is earning interest in a term deposit . That sort of cash buffer provides the ASRL with sufficient working capital to maintain its current programs of sweep & state based youth development and to stage the ASRL short course/national team selection and ASRL Open events.

Unfortunately the Navy will not be continuing their sponsorship of the ASRL in season 25/26 after many years of support. We are actively looking for new sponsor(s) to plug that gap in the budget. We would love to hear from any members who could introduce the ASRL to organisations who might consider getting involved as a sponsor. There are a number of packages available so we are not just looking for a major sponsor!

Despite that setback, the committee has done excellent work on developing budgets for the new season and on current projections the ASRL should complete the 25/26 season with a small deficit. A key part of achieving this result will be funding provided by SLSA. Significant work has already been done on finalising this season’s Memorandum of Understanding with SLSA and we hope to be able to make some announcements about this by the end of October.

The committee is also active in pursuing local government funding for the ASRL Short Course/National Team Selection event and we are about to sign a 3 year contract with the Regatta Shop for the supply of competitor merchandise at the ASRL Open  – watch out for the promotion of this merchandise on our social media platforms in the lead in to the Open at Wanda in February.

So lots happening! If you have any questions re ASRL financial matters feel free to contact me anytime by email finance@asrl.com.au or mobile 0403162617 (but remember I’m in Perth so 21 hours in front of you eastern staters 🙂)

Membership Survey 2025

The Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL) values the voices of our members. We are running this survey to better understand how surf boat rowers, sweeps, coaches, officials, and supporters feel about the state of surf boats in Australia.

Your feedback will help guide decisions on competition structure, age divisions, development opportunities, and initiatives to grow and strengthen our sport. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete, and your responses will remain confidential.

Together, we can shape the future of surf boat rowing.

Surf Sports Updates 2025/26 Season

The ASRL has successfully put forwarded some rule changes to the National Sport Advisory Committee for this coming season.

The sweep substitution rule change is a groundbreaking rule change for surf boats and surf sports. It is the first time ever that a composite crew will be allowed at a championship event. It acknowledges the advances we have made with sweeps accreditation process and keeps the safety and well being of our athletes and sweeps at the forefront of decision making

Rule Change No. 1 –

Crew Substitution Proposal:

Item 2.10.2 (a) – add a new NOTE referring readers to Section

5 for surf boat substitution rules.

New – Note: Substitution rules for Surf Boat events are contained in

Section 5

Item 2.18 (d) – add a clarification to referenced Sections, new

words underlined.

“In surf boat events the participation restriction rules as defined in

Sections 2.3 and 5

shall apply in addition to the substitution rules in Section 5.”

Item 5.1 Note 7 (iii) – revision, strikethrough for changes and

new wording underlined.

“Should a member of any crew become indisposed they may be

replaced subject to

approval of the Carnival Referee provided the replacement crew member

complies with

the requirements contained in Section 2.18 2.3 of the Surf Sports

Manual and any special

entry requirements. Once a crew member has been replaced, they are

ineligible to re-enter competition within that event unless:

(a) a medical practitioner certifies the competitor fit to resume

competition, and

(b) the referee approves the reinstatement..”

Rule Change No. 2 –

Sweep Substitution

add a new Note:

Item 5.1 (a) Note 3

If the Surf Risk Rating is 16 or above, with the approval of the Carnival

Referee, an S3 Sweep may replace an S2 Sweep in a carnival on the

condition that the S3 Sweep is already entered in the carnival and not

already competing in the same division. First priority is for a replacement

Sweep from within the same Club, but a Sweep from another Club will

be considered if there are no suitable replacements. If conditions abate

during the event the original S2 Sweep must return for the crew to

continue racing.

Any points acquired by the crew will be 100% allocated to the entry crew,

with no points going to the Club of the substitute Sweep.

Thanks to our ASRL Officials panel that have worked tirelessly on the wording of the rules to ensure they are fit for purpose. Remember these will apply at National Championship events. Your state may choose to apply local rules to facilitate local development as necessary.

Evolving the Way We Serve
Surf Life Saving is modernising how members train, compete, and contribute – making it more inclusive, flexible, and rewarding than ever.

Expanding Horizons – In March 2024, the SLSA Board launched the Expanding Horizons Review to identify new ways to grow, retain, and recognise active patrolling members. The review explored how engagement across Lifesaving, Sport, Development, Education, and Community can work together to strengthen patrol sustainability. Embracing an inclusive view of volunteering, the review recognises that whether members are patrolling, coaching, training, or supporting club operations, every contribution helps save lives. Drawing on national research into volunteering trends, Expanding Horizons highlights key challenges such as demographic shifts, economic pressures, and rising service demand. Its recommendations focus on making volunteering more flexible, rewarding, and accessible, removing barriers, modernising training and recognition, and creating clear pathways that convert participation into patrol strength.

Surf Sports remains a vital connection point for members and clubs, fostering fitness, engagement, and progression into lifesaving roles. The review proposes several initiatives to make participation more inclusive and streamlined:

Open participation: Allow financial members who complete a competition evaluation to compete in Club and Branch carnivals without a Bronze Medallion (BM).
Accessible events: Permit entry into low-risk beach and pool events without a BM, while maintaining BM or patrolling award requirements for higher-level championships.
Flexible team structures: Enable composite teams across clubs to support smaller and regional communities.
Member-led registration: Introduce digital self-registration for surf sports events to increase autonomy and reduce club administration.
Together, these reforms aim to make Surf Life Saving more open, adaptable, and rewarding, linking participation and patrol service to build stronger clubs and safer communities.

Skills Maintenance – following member feedback gathered in the 2024 national survey, a Skills Maintenance Review Group has updated the practical components for the 2025/26 season to better reflect real patrol conditions.

Key changes include:

Streamlined assessments – Fewer practical tasks, allowing members to focus on the core skills and knowledge essential for effective patrolling.
Realistic rescue scenario – The traditional Run Swim Run and Rescue components have been combined into a single Run Swim Rescue task, designed to better reflect real patrol situations. The updated assessment includes:
Timed component: 100m run to waist-deep water, followed by a 100m swim with a rescue tube (fins optional).
Untimed component: Perform a tube rescue and return the patient safely to the beach, completing the rescue on dry sand.
These updates ensure skills maintenance remains efficient, relevant, and focused on operational capability.

Lifesaving CPR – Since March 2024, SLSA has been developing Lifesaving CPR (LCPR), a practical and evidence-based approach to CPR for surf lifesavers. The program has involved more than 300 surf lifesavers nationally in its development, has been tested extensively, and is supported by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). Our approach follows ANZCOR Guidelines with a focus on Basic Life Support, which is recommended for lay and first responders. LCPR was designed to improve out of hospital cardiac survival rates by volunteer surf lifesavers. Trials showed clear improvements in compression quality, timing, and reduced pauses when using the hands-off technique and rapid assessment approach. This ensures surf lifesavers deliver the highest-quality CPR possible, in line with ANZCOR’s focus on effective compressions and breaths. This season the Skills Maintenance practical will focus on the introduction of LCPR.

We have a great new design in store for all of our states! Order yours now!

SLSA MOU 2025/26

The ASRL and Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) are pleased to continue their partnership for the 2025/26 season, working together to deliver high-quality surf boat events across the country. This year marks an exciting step forward, with SLSA providing financial support for both sweep and youth development initiatives for the first time, alongside continued funding for the delivery of SLSA events.

This partnership continues to strengthen each year, with the ASRL now recognised as an integral contributor to surf boat competition on the national stage.

The ASRL would also like to acknowledge and thank Wayne Druery, SLSA National Sport Manager, who will be retiring at the end of this year. Wayne has been an exceptional partner and advocate for surf sports, consistently demonstrating a commitment to improving opportunities for athletes and officials alike. It has been a pleasure working closely with him, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter.

In speaking with Wayne this week he reflected on his past 7 years in the role and is pleased to say that he feels the partnership between SLSA and the ASRL is in it’s strongest position to date. He has thoroughly enjoyed watching the growth of the ASRL under Michael’s Brooks guidance, followed by Nick Sampson and Myself. Wayne, feels that with initiatives like the ASRL Sweep Academy at Palm Beach, the sweeps accreditations and the ongoing work at a national level with the refinement of rules that the ASRL is in good hands and heading in the right direction.
