It is with deep regret and sadness that the ASRL advises it members and the public on the passing of esteemed Life Member and mate to all, Bill "Woofa" Barnett, at Mona Vale on early Friday morning, 21.12.2007. Woofa was 78 years and much loved and admired by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. He will be sorely missed, a great loss to the world of surf boats and rowing.
Woofa’s family and representatives of North Narrabeen SLSC have decided on the Australia Day Holiday (Nationally) 28th January for his ashes scattering and celebration of a wonderful era in surfboats.
Factors had to be considered in choosing this date for the chance of maximum attendance and without clashes including; The Queenscliff/East Coast Masters weekend (5-6 Jan), The World Junior Surfing titles at North Narra (5-6, 12-13 Jan), Ocean Thunder/Young Guns 19/20 Jan) so the Freshwater/Manly weekend with its new format, Freshie carnival boats at Manly, Manly carnival boats at centre Freshie, leaving the holiday Monday free would be ideal and would cater for any interstate crews wishing to attend.
Plus the fact Australia Day seems a very fitting day for a great Australian to be remembered. Click here to see a photo tribute to Woofa prepared by Brenden Reedy
