National Team Selection

ASRL Committee created the topic: National Team Selection
As we close on the National team selection event date we are confronted by a very disappointing situation that has the potential to stop some crews from representing their country in the upcoming test series in New Zealand.

Crew nominations to trial have been received from crews currently contesting the Ocean Thunder series and from crews outside the OT events. Unfortunately the OT organisation has chosen to include a clause in its contract that effectively prohibits any OT crew from being selected and representing Australia which is a sad outcome for our rowers.

SLSA has taken the opportunity to write to each nominated crew advising that nominated crews/clubs must reconcile their position in regard to being clear and available to travel if selected.

All crews will be asked to confirm availability on close of nomination (Friday 2 Dec) so only crews willing and able to commit will actually be invited to trial which is the only fair way to other crews in the process.

SLSA Letter sent directly on Friday 25 Nov,

Thank you for your nomination to trial for the Australian Surf Boat Team/s on Sunday 18 December, 2016 at Elouera Beach. Those crews who are selected to represent Australia will compete in Waihi Beach, New Zealand on February 4-5, 2017 against the New Zealand Team for the chance to be crowned Trans-Tasman Champions.

SLSA is aware there is a clash of dates between the Ocean Thunder Surf Boat Series and the Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Series and that a number of crews are obligated to compete in the Ocean Thunder at Dee Why Beach on February 4, 2017. Despite numerous discussions with the organisers of the Ocean Thunder Series to resolve the issue, they are unwilling to allow an alternate club crew to replace the successful Australian Surf Boat Team (if from the Ocean Thunder event).

Additionally SLSA has had discussions with SLSNZ about changing the date, however the Trans-Tasman event is built off the back of existing events and alternate dates and venues are considered not to be suitable from the organisers.

With nominations for the Australian Surf Boat Team closing Friday 2nd December (to nominate visit the members portal), SLSA reminds crews that those who nominate (both open and pathways), must be available and willing to represent Australia for the February Trans-Tasman event. SLSA would also like to remind crews, who are contracted to compete at Ocean Thunder, that they should be fully aware of their contract obligations with the Ocean Thunder organisers.

No late nominations accepted.

Development crews be aware that we may swing your selection event across from the Saturday to the Sunday. We will advise on this as quickly as possible after close of entries and sorry for the possible change. Should you be severely disadvantaged by a possible day change please advise us so that can be taken into consideration.

We have just been advised that the following circular has now been distributed. Crews intending to take part in the selection trials will need to confirm their availability to represent if selected and because of the confusion nominations have been left open by SLSA until this Sunday afternoon.

Circular 32/16-17

This circular confirms Surf Life Saving Australia’s position in relation to Surf Sport Representative Honours.

At the SLSA Board meeting on 7th December the following resolution was passed concerning the prevention of surf sport athletes from representing Australia.

“Representing Australia is the highest honor for a surf lifesaver, in the context of surf sports competition. SLSA members that wish to nominate for national team selection should be given every opportunity to do so, and then to compete for their country if they are chosen in a national team.

If a domestic competition conflicts with either a national trial event or an international competition, then the international event or Trial will take precedence and the domestic competition and its organisers will not prevent SLSA members from participating in that trial or competition.

In this context a domestic competition is defined as any local, branch, state, interstate or privately promoted event that is conducted by or licensed by any surf lifesaving body (national, state, branch or club).”
