Newsletter #62 - April 2016

Since our last newsletter we have had plenty happening all around Australia!

The Team Navy ASRL Open was held in spectacular conditions in New South Wales and congratulations to everyone who was involved with the delivery of the event. The Shellharbour SLSC volunteers are as dedicated as they came and after the move in 2015 we were extremely pleased to see the event remain at Shellharbour. The live stream was a resounding success as it was watched in almost 50 countries, had over 25,000 views and the quality of the stream was remarkable. Congratulations to Aaron Tannahill, Frank Veltman, Rod Costa and Drew Howell for your on air banter and brilliant commentary. More information can be found further down in this newsletter.

All state championships were held a few weeks ago and to find those results please visit your states 'surf sports' website or contact a representative from your surf rowers league. Now it is time for the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships and on behalf of the ASRL committee I wish all crews the best of luck. As a sign of the ASRL working with SLSA to improve all aspects of our sport the ASRL has undertaken to purchase a second set of cameras and transmission equipment to allow us to run the video finish over both areas at Aussies.

We are currently looking for someone to assist with uploading draws and results at the Aussies, particularly on Saturday and Sunday. If you are able to assist can you please get in touch with Don Alexander via phone 0407362686 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Young Gun in South Australia Can't Get Out Of The Boat

The introduction of the Under 19 Female category in a number of states is bringing out more and more junior crews and the Henley SLSC 'Falcons' are kicking goals in South Australia against a number of junior rowers, both in Under 19's and Under 23's when they get the chance! Beth, Sophie, Chloe and Isabelle are all dedicated surf boat rowers who will be in the boat for years to come.

Isabelle Williams started surf life saving at a young age and has always had her eye on the surf boats! We were lucky enough to have a chat with Isabelle and we hope you enjoy the interview!

Name: Isabelle Williams

Age: 17

Club: Henley Surf Life Saving Club

Years in the sport: 9-10 (surf life saving overall)

Study/work: Year 12 at Henley High school/ casual worker at Caffe Primo Henley Beach

What got you into surf boat rowing?
Buttsy was my age group leader all through Nippers! He had always been keen on getting a few of us girls involved from the very start! So as soon as we were old enough he got us all in the boat and we loved it so much we got stuck into training straight away!

What do you love about the sport? I love the adrenaline when rowing in big surf and the feeling of accomplishment when you catch a huge wave! I love team sports because you'll always have your friends and team mates to support you! Also how friendly and close everyone in the sport is including crews from other clubs, it makes it fun and enjoyable!

Who do you look up to in surf boat rowing and why? I personally look up to the Strikers (an open women's team at my club). I remember watching them compete at the Aussies in 2015 and the moment they won their silver medal in the final, all of their hard work had payed off and inspired me to want the same thing for my team. They are all amazing rowers, always push themselves, are committed to their team and the sport and have taken our crew under their wing to help us out in training and reaching our own goals. Hopefully one day we can follow in their foot steps!

What is your favourite form of training and why? Wave practise! I love when Fazz (our sweep) takes us down to Middleton and south port to allow us to gain some experience in a bit of surf! It's such a good feeling when we achieve what we aim for and also hilarious when we all mess up

What is your high point in your surf boat career? I haven't been rowing for very long so I don't have much to compare to but the best moment so far was when we won our first few races at our second ever carnival at Middleton competing against under 23 teams!

Would you rather being the underdog, a contender, or the favourite and why? I think I would rather be the underdog because it means we always have something to aim for and are constantly able to push ourselves to improve and beat the favourites!

Do you enjoy positive rivalries with opponents and teammates? I love rivalries! It gives you something to aim for and allows me to set goals when we are trying to beat a particular team! My team mates and I are all very competitive so we love having those small rivals to motivate us to push harder. Also having a healthy rivalry within our team means we are always pushing each other to improve!

What are you looking forward to at this seasons ASRL Navy Series? I'm looking forward to breaking into the sport as it is still our first season, travelling to different competitions to compete against new crews and hopefully meeting a bunch of new people along the way while gaining some experience.

Tell us something about you we don’t know?
Netball is originally my main focused sport however rowing has taken over as my favourite!

Thanks for the chat Isabelle! Look out for the Henley Falcons on the beach this summer!
