George Bass Marathon 2007/08

IncomingThe Far South Coast Branch Surf Life Saving NSW and the organising committee are proud to announce the dates for the upcoming 2007/2008 XV George Bass Marathon.

Commencing Sunday 30th December 2007, and finish Saturday 5th January 2008

7 days, 7 legs & 190km's of the best coastline in Australia.

The George Bass Marathon is 33 years old this year, a phenomenal feat in today’s high pressure sporting environment. The Bass has had it’s detractors over the years, mainly from crews who say “we’re a sprint crew”, but only those who have taken the time to compete understand the real benefit afforded from this race.

The fundamental requirement for any crew success is to have a good endurance base to work from. There is no better endurance base than the training required to match race for 7 days on end, over an average of 2.5 hours per day.

The record speaks for itself as crews continually follow up a Bass year with fantastic results at the Nationals. This started right from the very first Bass in 1975 when Victorian crew Point Lonsdale finished 3rd to Cronulla & Bulli in the Bass and went on to win the Nationals at Dee Why.

Many other crews have repeated this result including Bulli, North Cronulla, Grange, North Steyne & Austinmeer with, countless others filling semi and final positions as a direct result of the Bass racing.

Last Bass it was the turn of the Canberra Vikings rowing for Batemans Bay who went of to contest finals at both the NSW & Australian Championships directly after winning the 2006 GBM.
